Department of Mathematics
The program includes both individual research and group activities. Each student is assisted by a faculty adviser and some also by a graduate-student adviser. Group activities include seminars and other social and professional events. Students are encouraged to continue their research during the following academic year, under the direction of their summer mentor or another faculty member.
Our program is run jointly at Rutgers with the DIMACS/DIMATIA REU. See the joint homepage for important details.
DatesThe dates of the eight-week program are May 31- July 29, 2016.
EligibilityParticipating students are expected to have a strong mathematical background. Depending on the nature of the project, good computer skills may also be required. Preference is be given to Rutgers juniors and seniors with a major in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related field. However, sophomores with exceptionally strong backgrounds and students from other colleges will also be considered. Students are selected on the basis of their academic performance and their compatibility with the available projects. Applicants are encouraged to indicate which research project they would like to work on.
Women, members of minorities, and students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Participating undergraduates receive free on-campus housing and a stipend of $4,400 if they choose to live in a double room (or to choose not to use the free housing provided), $3,600 if they choose to live in a single room. We also pay certain travel expenses. Under NSF rules, only citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. are eligible to receive stipends; we do not accept other students even if they would be willing to waive stipend.
For final reports of most students in previous years, check the http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/REU/20xy/participants.html links, where x and y are the last two digits of the year.
