Mathematics Department - Math 104 - Elementary Combinatorics and Probability

Math 104 - Elementary Combinatorics and Probability

General Information

01:640:104 Elementary Combinatorics and Probability (3)
The course begins with an introduction to the mathematics of counting, which is then applied to the main topic of the course, discrete probability. After devoting much of the semester to probability and some of its applications, the course concludes with an introduction to statistics.
This is an elementary course for liberal arts majors, in the sense that it does not presume any knowledge of precalculus or calculus. It is however, more challenging than Math 103, and more focused in its subject matter. Most students who take Math 104 have already taken Math 103, although it is not a prerequisite.
Prerequisite: 01:640:026 or appropriate performance on the placement test in mathematics. May not be used as an elective for the math major or minor.

Textbook

Finite Mathematics: An Applied Approach, Tenth Edition by Michael Sullivan,

custom edition for Rutgers University, ISBN 978-0-470-56523-0. This custom edition is a softcover textbook, and contains chapters 6-9 of the full, non-custom edition.

Online Materials

Math 104 uses WileyPlus, an integrated system for completing homework assignments and viewing course materials online. This system also gives online access to the textbook. Every student enrolled in the course must obtain a WileyPlus registration code, which can be done in either of two ways:

  • Buy the Rutgers custom edition of the text, which is available at the campus bookstores. If purchased new, the textbook comes prepackaged with a registration code for WileyPlus.
  • Buy online-only access to WileyPlus, by going to www.wileyplus.com.
In either case, every student enrolled in the course must acquire a registration code for WileyPlus.
