Mathematics 244
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS FOR ENGINEERING AND PHYSICS
Sections 01-03
SPRING 2007
Final Exam: Wednesday, May 9, 12:00-3:00, SEC 117
- There will be a FINAL EXAM PROBLEM SESSION on Wednesday, May
2, 2:00-3:45, in SEC 117.
- Here is the review problem set for the final
exam. As explained on the problem set, it is not complete,
covering primarily material we have discussed since the second exam. You
should also consult the review problem set for exam
1 and the review problem set for exam 2; it
might be a good idea to review the midterm exams themselves, as well.
- Correction: In the answer to problem 1 on the final review
problem set, the entry in the lower left corner of the matrix should be
−3, not 3
- Office hours for E. Speer during reading period and exam week (all
in Hill 520): Note change (5/1) in office hours for Thursday 5/3.
- Tuesday, May 1, 3:20-4:40 PM;

Center 606
- E. Speer: Monday, Busch 4th period (1:40–3:00 PM), and
Tuesday, Busch 5th period (3:20–4:40 PM), Hill Center 520
Announcements:
- 04/23/2007:
- Here are the phase plane plots for the
predator-prey model which were shown in class today.
- One does in fact observe cyclic behavior of populations in nature, but
it is not clear to what extent a simple model like the predator-prey
equations we have studied can help explain them. If you would like to read
more about this, here are a (very) few references. I displayed pages from
the first and third of these in the lecture.
- An article by C. Elton and M. Nicholson
discussing in some detail the actual records for lynx pelts of the Hudson
Bay Trading Company. There are nice graphs showing the cyclic oscillations
in the lynx population (as indicated by trapping records).
- A survey article by P. J. Wangersky
discussing the general applicability of populations models of the Lotka-Volterra type.
- An article by M. E. Gilpin entitled
"Do Hares Eat Lynx?" Besides its amusing title, this article seems to have
intelligent things to say about the general problem of modeling population
behavior.
- A set of
lecture notes from a course given by Dr. Bob Schooley at the University
of Illinois. This is a power point presentation. Here is the course web page with more
lecture notes.
- 04/19/2007:
- 04/16/2007:
- My office hours are cancelled today.
- REVISED SCHEDULE: I now plan to cover Section 9.4 on Thursday,
Section 9.5 on Monday 4/23, and Sections 5.2 through 5.3 on 4/26 and 4/30.
- The last quiz, Quiz 10,on Wednesday 4/18, will cover the
material of last week: Sections 9.1 through 9.3.
- Maple lab 5 has now been posted. Since it is related to material from
Sections 9.4 and 9.5, which we will not finish until next Monday (although
it could be done after Section 9.3), I am delaying the due date until
MONDAY, APRIL 30. Because this is so late and I must get the labs to
the grader quickly, no late labs will be accepted under any
circumstances. Note that this is a change of the policy announced
in the original handout. If you are concerned that the printers may go
down again, or the Raritan flood, you are welcome to turn the lab in on
Thursday 4/26.
- 04/12/2007:
- 03/29/2007:
- We will have a problem/review session Tuesday, April 3, at 8:10
PM in SEC 207. Bring questions: if
you don't ask me anything the session will be over quickly. Review
problems are posted below, in the entry for 03/26.
- The exam will cover:
- Chapter 3
- Material after Section 3.5 (that is, not covered on Exam 1) will be
emphasized.
- From section 3.5 you need to know how to solve a constant coefficient
equation when the characteristic equation has a double root. You do not
have to know the method of reduction of order in general.
- Section 5.5;
- Sections 7.1–7.5
- The supplementary notes on linear algebra.
- Here are the plots of the phase plane shown
in class today.
- 03/26/2007:
- 03/18/2007:
- Here are some notes on linear algebra
covering material to be discussed in lecture March 8, ,19, and 22. These
should be regarded as a supplement to Section 7.3 of Boyce and
DiPrima; you should read that section as well as the notes. The notes also
contain some exercises. Please be aware that you are responsible
for material covered in lecture and in these notes, even if it is not in
the text.
- Maple lab 3 has been posted; it is due Thursday, March 22.
- 02/15/2007:
- Exam coverage: Exam 1 (Thursday, Feb 22, in lecture) will cover
the material given on the original syllabus (available below). Note,
however:
- We did not cover the backward Euler method of Section 8.1.
- From Section 3.5 you are responsible only for knowing the solution of a
second order constant coefficient equation when the characteristic
polynomial has a double root. The derivation of this solution, and other
applications of the method of reduction of order, will be
covered on the next exam.
- Here is the chart of forms of solutions with
undetermined coefficients that I showed in class today.
- 02/15/2007:
- We will have a problem/review session Sunday, February 18, at 7:30
PM in SEC 118 (next door to our lecture room). Bring questions: if
you don't ask me anything the session will be over quickly.
- Here are some review problems for Exam 1.
- 02/05/2007:
- 02/01/2007:
- 01/29/2007:
- 01/18/2007:
- On Monday, January 22, the time for my office hour will be changed to 3:20-4:40.
