NOTES:

1. The individual instructors may assign Maple labs according to their own preferences.

2. It is suggested that Maple labs be collected two weeks after they are assigned.

3. Chapter 8 on numerical methods has been moved up, because some of the Maple labs rely on the use of numerical methods and it is helpful if the students have some idea about what they are.

4. Chapter 5 on series solutions has been moved to the end of the semester.

5. This syllabus was created in July 2009 by E. R. Speer, primarily to accommodate minor differences between the eighth and ninth editions of Boyce and DiPrima:

  • Linear independence, previously covered in Section 3.3, was postponed until Section 4.1, and the remaining material in Section 3.3 was moved to Section 3.2. Sections 3.4–3.9 were renumbered as 3.3–3.8
  • Material on the Euler equation, previously located in Section 5.5, was moved into Section 5.4. In the current syllabus it is suggested that this material be covered after Section 3.3 as a second example (after constant coefficient equations) of a linear second order homogeneous equation which can be solved explicitly.

6. This syllabus is closely based on the syllabus for the eighth edition created in August 2004 by R.T. Bumby, which itself represented a minor modification of a syllabus created in January 2001.
