The Ph.D. requirements include satisfactory completion of 24 credits of Research in Mathematics (640:701 or 640:702).
Students normally register for research credits after they have found a thesis advisor and advanced to candidacy (which occurs after passing the written and oral qualifying exams, and the foreign language exam.)
Students will be given permission to take research credits before advancing to candidacy provided that (1) they have passed the written and oral qualifying exams and have a thesis advisor, and (2) they declare that they will take the foreign language exam before the beginning of the subsequent semester. (Students are then expected to follow through on their declaration.)
To register for research credits, see the graduate secretary to get a special permission number.
It is common to take research credits during the summer; if you were a TA during the previous academic year, you can take up to 6 research credits without being charged.
