Ph.D. Requirements - Seminars

Mathematics Graduate Program

All Ph.D. students are to register for and satisfactorily complete two units of seminar 640:616 (fall semester) and 640:617 (spring semester). Students select a seminar to attend from among the department focused research seminars. (The departmental colloquium, faculty research perspective seminar, and pizza seminar are not eligible for seminar credit.)

To register for seminar, the student should complete the "Application for permission to register for seminar" form available in Hill 306. This form requires the signature of the student's advisor. The form should be submitted to the graduate program secretary at the beginning of the semester (before the add period for registration ends). The advisor is also responsible for submitting a grade (S or U) at the end of the semester.

Students can obtain seminar credit for seminars attended at nearby universities, with prior approval from the graduate director.

The formal requirement says that the student must take one unit in the fall and one unit in the spring. In practice, two units taken in different semesters has been acceptable.
