Tom Sznigir, Rutgers University: Among all rectangles of a given perimeter, the square has the largest area. A sequence of coin flips will, in the long run, have heads and tails in equal proportion. By symmetry, this is all to be expected. We count on problems exhibiting certain kinds of symmetry to have solutions exhibiting the same kind of symmetry. There are the odd exceptions, but the principle seems to hold most of the time. In this talk, we will look at some of the useful ways symmetry lends itself to solving problems.
