History and status of homology manifolds

A review of the long, complicated, and not entirely monotone development of the theory of homology manifolds. The amazing construction of exotic homology manifolds by Bryant, Ferry, Mio and Weinberger is sketched, along with a recent patch by Pedersen, Quinn and Ranicki, and a new approach that gives 4-dimensional examples.
