ABSTRACT: Here is an outline of the talk, which is intended to be accessible to the entire math and physics departments:

  • The background and definition of the index for an operator on a Hilbert space.
  • Some simple examples.
  • The Index Theorem.
  • Applications in Mathematics.
  • Applications to Chiral Anomalies in String Theory.
