"Case Studies: An overview of the method and a discussion for grad students"
Time: 10:45 AM
Location: Hill 705
Abstract: I will give a brief overview of what case studies are and whey
they are of use in the context of learning how to teach. Then we will
examine and discuss a case study together.

"Rational Number Understanding Requires A Conceptual Change"
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Hill 705
Abstract: Many undergraduates lack a mathematical understanding of
rational numbers and their rules of combination.
The focus of this talk will be on the kinds of systematic errors that are
made. There is a robust tendency to treat problems with
percent and fraction formats as if they were novel cases of natural
number. Further, it is unlikely that different representational
formats are treated as different ways to represent rational numbers. These
data support the idea that mastery of rational
numbers requires a conceptual change.
