Placement Advice for E-credit Courses

Mathematics Undergraduate Program

E-credits are credits which count toward full-time student status, but do not count toward graduation. E-credit courses (025 and 023/024, 026, 027) are available for students who have not placed into courses at the level carrying graduation credit.

Math 025,   ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA (3E credits), is a standard one-semester elementary algebra course. The prerequisite for Math 025 is a placement of EAL (Elementary Algebra) on the Rutgers Placement Test in Mathematics. A student passing this course should be ready for Math 026, intermediate algebra.

Augmented elementary algebra sections are available for students who place into CMP (Computational Skills). They are as follows:

Math 001/025 (1.5E + 3E credits) is a course (treated by the registration system as two courses) meant for students who place into CMP (Computational Skills). Students in this category should sign up for both Math 001 AND the matching section of Math 025. Together the course meets 3 times a week. A student passing this course should be ready for Math 026, intermediate algebra.
Math 023-024 (3E + 3E credits) is the Math 001/025 course (see above) spread out over two semesters. Math 023 is offered only in the fall and Math 024 is offered only in the spring. The course meets twice a week in the evenings only. A student passing both these courses should be ready for Math 026, intermediate algebra.
Math 026,  INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA (3E credits), is a standard one-semester intermediate algebra course. The prerequisite for Math 026 is Math 025 or a placement of IAL (Intermediate Algebra) on the Rutgers Placement Test in Mathematics. A student passing this course should be ready for one of our precalculus courses. It is strongly recommended that students receiving less than a B in intermediate algebra enroll in the two-semester precalculus (Math 111-112) rather than the one semester precalculus (Math 115).

Math 027,  ELEMENTS OF ALGEBRA (3E credits), is a course designed specifically to prepare students who place into elementary algebra for the liberal arts mathematics course (Math 103). The prerequisite for Math 027 is placement of at least EAL (Elementary Algebra) on the Rutgers Placement Test in Mathematics. Math 027 should NOT be taken by any student who intends to take precalculus, or who needs Math 026 as a prerequisite for any other course. A student may, with a college's permission, use this course in place of Math 026 to satisfy the college's basic skills requirement. Check with your college. This course will not satisfy an explicit course prerequisite of Math 026.
