Placement Advice for Courses in Mathematics for Liberal Arts Students

Mathematics Undergraduate Program

The liberal arts math courses Math 103 and Math 104 are college credit bearing mathematics courses designed to satisfy the quantitative distribution requirements of most of the colleges. The courses explore interesting topics and applications at an introductory level. These courses may not be used as an elective for the math major or minor. The prerequisite for either Math 103 or Math 104 is Math 026, Math 027, or a placement of CMA (Precalculus Two Semesters) or PCA (Precalculus One Semester) or CAL (Calculus) on the Rutgers Placement Test in Mathematics. Math 103 is offered both fall and spring, while Math 104 is offered only in the spring.

Math 103,   TOPICS IN MATHEMATICS FOR THE LIBERAL ARTS (3 credits), tries to show students interesting mathematics, much of it developed relatively recently, in contexts that are relevant to individuals who do not have a strong interest in the sciences. There is currently an honors version of Math 103 that deals with the mathematics and public policy issues related to cryptography. Students should contact the Mathematics Department directly if they are interested in taking the Honors Math 103 course.

Math 104, ELEMENTARY COMBINATORICS AND PROBABILITY (3 credits), gives an introduction to the basic concepts of combinatorial mathematics, probability, and statistics.
