01:640:495 Selected Topics in Mathematics: Financial Mathematics (3)

Prerequisites: Probability (01:640:477 or 01:960:381),
Multivariable calculus (01:640:251), and Linear algebra(01:640:250).

This course will be an introduction to the mathematical techniques used in
the finance industry to model and to analyze financial derivatives. The
course will cover: basics of options markets, interest rates and
discounting; hedging and arbitrage; pricing options with binomial tree
models; risk-neutral probabilities and martingales; Brownian motion,
geometric Brownian motion and the Black-Scholes formula; partial
differential equations for pricing.

Prerequisites: 01:640:026 or 01:640:027.

Re-examination of familiar mathematical ideas, primarily about number systems and arithmetic operations, in the context of mathematics as a whole and from the perspective of young students first learning them. Emphasis on reasoning and communication.

Special Note: For students interested in pursuing a career in elementary
school teaching. May not be used as an elective for the math major or
minor.
