640:492:T1 Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar
What does Advanced Calculus have to do with teaching math in grades 7-12?
Many prospective teachers ask this question, and for good reason. The answer is "plenty", but that is not obvious. However, Math 311 has so much in it already that faculty often cannot take the time to discuss this topic.
This spring, the Department of Mathematics will offer for the first time a one-credit seminar designed to highlight the most important connections between Advanced Calculus and the mathematics of junior high school and high school curricula. We invite you to register for this seminar. Here are the details.
- Course title: Math 492:T1 Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar
- Section title: Connecting Advanced Calculus to High School Math
- Meeting times: Tuesdays, 6:10-8:15 PM, March 4 through April 15 (The schedule says "second 7 weeks" but these dates are correct!)
- Meeting location: Hardenburgh Hall, CAC
- Prerequisites: Permission of the department. To get this permission fill out the paper "special permission form" which you can obtain from Hill 303 on Busch or from 215 in the GSE. You must have Math 311 (or equivalent) as prerequisite or co-requisite.
- Format: Each class meeting will be a workshop on one of the most important connections between the mathematics in Advanced Calculus and the mathematics taught in high school. The focus will be on the concepts that students need to understand and use and on the special kinds of mathematical knowledge that teachers need to have to function effectively in a classroom. We are planning to invite a high school teacher to take part in at least one of the seminar meetings.
- Credit and grading: The seminar carries one credit in Math (640). Grades will be based on participation in the discussions and on a relatively short piece of reflective writing.
If you have further questions, please ask one of us. We hope to see you in this seminar!
