Rethinking the Mathematics Curriculum for Engineering and Science Students

An interdisciplinary conference to be held at Georgia Tech

April 25 and 26, 2008

Lecture Hall 119, Instructional Center

Georgia Tech Campus

This meeting will be the third in a series that will bring together engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians to discuss the way that recent developments in science and engineering are changing the kind of mathematics that is now being used in  science and engineering courses and in research, and how that should or does impact the undergraduate math curriculum.

Since, as noted in the first two meetings, more mathematics, of a more advanced type, is being used in many disciplines early on, the question of "What should be in the math curriculum?" is inseparable from the questions "How do we get it across?" and the closely related questions "How do we better prepare students for the challenges to come?" and "How do we help the students cope with the demands of a challenging math curriculum?"

This meeting will focus on the two sets of issues raised by the questions: "What should be in the math curriculum?"and "How do we get it across?"

The meeting will begin on Friday with a discussion of content issues by several speakers. This will be followed by a round table discussion, in which the and conference participants are all encouraged to take part. The undergraduate coordinators from across the campus have been invited to express their views, and their school's' perspective, both in presentations and in the discussion. We will then follow up with a number of presentations on the topic of getting the mathematics across. Here, there will be presentations no on;y on what is being done at various universities, including of course Georgia Tech, but also some very innovative and effective programs involving high school students.

There will be no registration fee. The conference is supported by the NSF and Georgia Tech.

The conference is organized by Eric Carlen, Maria Carvalho and Michael Loss.
