Office hours:  My office is in Hill  Center  (the tall building in face of SEC) 214, and I tentatively reserved  Monday 7th period for Math 291 office hours. If you need an appointment at other times please write me an email.

The topics covered are listed in the syllabus, but the material is often presented in a different manner, with a particular emphasis on  deeper understanding  of the concepts. This accent will be reflected in the exams also. Attendance is strongly encouraged. It is very useful to ask questions. It is also very useful to come to office hours  to discuss in more detail anything that you don't understand well enough and to get more information and additional material on the topics that you are interested in.

Homework problems to be turned in will be announced in the workshop. You are encouraged to solve  problems beyond those suggested.

Maple
Symbolic language programs such as Maple  (link to Prof. Walsh's web page) are extremely powerful and useful tools in calculus. (Another widely used and powerful language is Mathematica, but its use is slightly harder at  the beginner's level, while I find Maple's particularly easy to learn and its extensive help system is very intuitive.) By the end of the course you should be relatively comfortable with Maple and  should able to find your way easily towards solving other types of problems than  those assigned.

Grading  Each midterm counts for 100p and the final exam is 200p. About 15% of the final grade (70p) will come from homework and workshops.
