Graduate Student Combinatorics Seminar, Fall 2009

This seminar gives grad students the opportunity to hear and present talks on discrete math, either on topics beyond a standard combinatorics class or original research. GCS is meant to be a friendly, slightly informal speaking environment where questions are encouraged at all points throughout the talk. We only assume a basic general knowledge of combinatorics (roughly equivalent to a single undergrad semester), so students in any area are welcome to attend.

Current Seminar:

Date: November 18th, 2009
Time: 12:10 PM
Place: Graduate Student Lounge, 7th Floor, Hill Center
Speaker: Aaron Jaggard
Title: Parallels between classes of permutations
Abstract: We discuss some different combinatorial ways in which two classes of permutations might resemble each other. We'll focus on parallels between involutions in the symmetric group and the symmetric group as a whole, in particular parallels related to pattern avoidance. We'll also suggest some related interesting questions.
