Office Hours: WF 3:30pm-5pm, Hill Center 624, Busch campus.

    Calculators:

A graphing calculator is recommended for the course (TI-83+ or equivalent). However, calculators with qwert keypads or symbolic manipulation capabilities are NOT allowed on any exam. This means that the TI-89 and the TI-92 calculators are NOT allowed on any exam.

    Homework:

Solving homework problems is the only reliable way to learn mathematics. There are two types of homework problems for this class, online and written: The online problems use the computer system “WeBWorK” developed at the University of Rochester. one (or two) WeBWorK assignments will be due each week. WeBWorK problem sets not submitted by the deadline will automatically receive a grade of zero. A set of suggested written homework problems is also provided. As part of your studying you should attempt as many of these problems as possible. You are expected to know how to do any of the types of problems represented in these sets. At the end of each lecture I'll announce a few of these problems as an “extra credit” homework assignment due in the following class. They will not be graded carefully, but for each of these assignments that you hand in you'll get 1 point. The total of these points at the end of the semester will be counted as an extra quiz grade to replace your SECOND lowest quiz score, whichever is more. These assignments will not be accepted late.

    Weekly Quizzes:

2 quizzes per week, unless we have to prepare for the midterm exams or final. Each quiz will usually cover the material from the lectures of the previous day, basing on the suggested problems. NO quiz on the first day of class. The LOWEST quiz score will be dropped. NO make-up quiz.

    Exams:

There will be two midterms (dates will be announced in class well in advance) and a final exam. Make-up exams will be only be given in the case of a well-documented illness or major emergency or an outside commitment approved with advanced notice.

    Grading:

Grading will be based on a weighted average of your grades on exams, WebWork assignments (and any other homework that may be assigned) and quizzes as follows: Quizzes 12.5%, WebWork 12.5% midterms 16.5% each, Final exam 42%.
