All first year calculus recitations using peer mentors include in-class work by the studnets on specially designed workshop problems. One important duty of the peer mentor is to provide assistance to students doing workshops. The second main job is grading. The peer mentor will be grading either homeworks and quizzes, or workshops, depending on the course. Calculus courses at Rutgers that use peer mentors run in three different formats: the four credits format, consisting of 2 lectures and 1 recitation per week; the five credits format, consisting of 2 lectures, 1 recitation, and 1 practicum session; EXCEL calculus, a 6 credit format, featuring 3 recitations a week in addition to the 2 lectures. |

Peer mentoring in the four credits format.
The peer mentor attends the recitation and works with a teaching assistant. The recitation is devoted in part to discussing homework problems and in part to workshop problems. Depending on the professor, some sections may also include quizzes. In the recitation, the peer mentor helps facilitate workshop problems, and also helps with the administration of the recitation, by returning graded quizzes or problems and helping to give any quiz. Outside of recitation, the peer mentor is responsible for grading selected homework problems or quizzes, as directed by the teaching assistant or professor. Average total work load (recitation+grading+preparation) is about 4.5 hours/weeks. |

Peer Mentoring in the five credits format.
The peer mentor attends the recitation, but not the practicum, and works with the course professor. The entire recitation is devoted to workshop activity. The peer mentor facilitates this activity and otherwise helps to administer the recitation. Outside of recitation the peer mentor is responsible for grading students' workshop write-ups in consultation with the course professor. Average total work load (recitation+grading+preparation) is about 4.5 hours/weeks. |

Peer Mentoring for Intensive (EXCEL) Calculus.
Recitations meet three times a week; all feature at least some workshop activities. The peer mentor is expected to attend all three recitations. The peer mentor helps administer the recitation, and helps in facilitating group work on workshop problems. The peer mentor also does some homework grading, but less than in the other formats. Average total work load (recitation+grading+preparation) is about 5.5 hours/weeks. |
