Research
I woke up one morning and found that I had somehow become entangled in researching algebraic combinatorics. My advisor is Anders Buch.

Memory of my Father, Richard Irving Samuel

Dick Samuel died on March 20th, 2011 from complications of adult respiratory distress syndrome. He was 71 years old. His obituary can be found here. Among other things, he was an accomplished patent attorney. His work for Gordon Gould, the inventor of the laser, is immortalized in the book Laser: The Inventor, the Nobel Laureate, and the Thirty-Year Patent War by Nick Taylor. He was able to secure dozens of patents for Gould and worked tirelessly to ensure that Gould was paid the royalties he was due. Wikipedia calls it “one of the most important patent battles in history.” A short summary can be found in the article Patent Pending published in 1989.
This was by no means my father’s only achievement. Whenever he set his mind to something, he didn’t rest until he succeeded. Even though he was always busy with something, he was always there for his family. We all loved him, and we will always miss him.
