Probably the most striking example of this growth has been in the areas often included under the broad heading of systems, signals, and control. A truly interdisciplinary field, it involves the combined efforts of mathematicians and engineers from many different backgrounds, from abstract algebra and differential geometry to signal processing and robotics. The many conferences and journals in the area attest to the vitality of the field. The main purpose of MCSS is to provide an international, scholarly forum for publishing full-length, original research papers, with an emphasis on high-quality, mathematically rigorous contributions. Papers dealing with applications of nontrivial theoretical results will be also encouraged, as will expository papers of exceptional merit. All papers will be subjected to thorough technical reviews as a part of the evaluation process. The first issue of the new journal is expected to appear in October, 1987. Publication of three issues per year is planned. The journal is aimed at an audience of mathematicians and electrical, mechanical, and aerospace engineers interested in significant technical developments. Scope Mathematics of Control, Signals, and Systems seeks to publish in the areas of Mathematical System Theory, Control Theory, and Signal Processing. The journal will accept papers whose common thread is systems, and whose themes span a broad range of topics including control and signal processing. Included within this scope are, for instance, algebraic and geometric aspects of linear and nonlinear control systems, stochastic control, stability, identification and estimation, robust and adaptive systems, signal analysis and modeling, discrete-event systems, numerical and computational techniques, large scale systems, decentralized and hierarchical control, dynamic optimization and optimal control. The mathematics typically used in these areas involves disciplines such as linear and abstract algebra, differential and algebraic geometry, topology, stochastic processes, numerical analysis, operator theory and functional analysis, symbolic computation, and discrete mathematics. Instructions to Authors Mathematics of Control, Signals, and Systems is now accepting papers for review for publication. All submitted papers should be written in English. They should include an introduction explaining the motivation and background for the problems being studied, as well as a short but informative abstract and at least five keywords. For consideration of a paper, authors should submit four copies of the manuscript to one of the two Managing Editors listed above. Responsibility for obtaining reviews and arriving at a publication recommendation will lie with the Associate Editors. Originality, substance, and clarity of exposition will be the main factors used in determining acceptance. ________________________________________________________________________ News Item from the Editors: Electronic Mail Addresses Given a very positive response to publishing our list of subscribers, we are including the updated list as of the date of the second issue. IEEE) Abstract: Data flow is a natural paradigm for describing DSP applications for concurrent implementation on parallel hardware. Data flow programs for signal processing are directed graphs where each node represents a function and each arc represents a signal path. Synchronous data flow (SDF) is a special case of data flow (either atomic or large grain) in which the number of data samples produced or consumed by each node on each invocation is specified a-priori. Nodes can be scheduled statically (at compile time) onto single or parallel programmable processors so the run-time overhead usually associated with data flow evaporates. Multiple sample rates within the same system are easily and naturally handled. Conditions for correctness of SDF graph are explained and scheduling algorithms are described for homogeneous parallel processors sharing memory. A preliminary SDF software system is described, and a voiceband data modem examined with the help of this system illustrates the efficacy of the technique. Also, the use of SDF for automatic VLSI circuit generation from a functional description is proposed. __________________________________________________________________________ List of some recent work from B. (3) SWITCHING SYSTEMS, I :: This (together with 2 related papers in preparation) is a revision and expansion of an earlier report. It concerns the analysis of the dynamics of variable-structure systems satisfying (e.g., as a consequence of the implementation of switching control by feedback) `switching rules' of a certain general form. (4) PERIODIC SOLUTION OF CERTAIN VARIATIONAL INEQUALITIES (with S. Belbas) :: For certain VIs arising from the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman formulation of a class of stochastic optimal control problems with periodicity in time, it is shown that there is a unique periodic solution. (5) A ONE-SIDED MISCELLANY :: Some distributed parameter problems with the restriction that the control be non-negative. Two kinds of papers are solicited. Regular papers requiring approximately 30 minutes for presentation will br reproduced (up to 6 pages) in the Proceedings. Short papers suitable for presentation in approximately 15 minutes will appear as one-page summaries in the Proceedings. A regular or short designation, title, and summary should be submitted by January 16, 1987. Authors will be notified of acceptance by February 16, 1987.
