Freshman-Sophomore Honors Seminar

This seminar is designed for first- and second-year students who are considering further study in mathematics. There is also a Junior-Senior Seminar. These seminars satisfy requirements of the Honors Track in Mathematics.

The Freshman-Sophomore Seminar provides a glimpse into the world of mathematics that lies beyond elementary calculus. It aims to be informal, lively, and challenging.

Students are expected to participate actively by making presentations in the seminar, collaborating with other students in preparing talks, and contributing to discussions. Occasionally, we have guest speakers (professors and graduate students).

In the Spring '09 semester, the seminar will be centered around groups and their graphs. For more information on the present semester, see  Spring '09.

For lists of seminar activities in previous semesters, see Spring '02,  Fall '02,  Spring '03,   Fall '03,   Spring '04,   Fall '04,   Spring '05,   Spring '06,   Spring '07, and Spring '08.

The Freshman-Sophomore Seminar is run by Professors Enriqueta Carrington and János Komlós, and it meets on Thursdays, 7th period (6:40 to 8:00 PM) in Hill Center, room 525. It is a one-credit course, and it has course numbers 01:640:195:01 in Fall semesters and 01:640:196:01 in Spring semesters.

Registration for the seminar requires special permission. Students are selected on the basis of their previous achievements and on the recommendation of faculty. If you wish to apply, fill in a special-permission form, available in Hill Center #303. Please mention the name of at least one math professor who knows you well.
