News & Announcements

07/17 The Finals have been graded. All final grades
      are posted on Sakai (including your course
      letter grade).

      The final exam average was about 70%.

      If you would like to look over your exam,
      I will be in my office tomorrow morning
      around 9:30am-10am and again around 2pm.

      Have a great summer!

07/15 I have refreshed all of the grades on Sakai.
      Scores for quizzes 1-5, a quiz average (with
      lowest score dropped), Maple labs 0, S1, and
      S2 scores, and Exam scores are all posted.

07/14 Here is the formula sheet for the final exam.

      Here are some review problems (for Chapters 5 & 9).

      Dr. Speer provided an excellent set of review problems particularly
      pertaining to the material covered since Exam #2. I have edited the
      review sheet indicating which problems should be skipped. Also, I have
      included a list of sections which you may skip over when studying for
      the final exam. We will discuss what the final will cover in class
      either Tuesday or Wednesday.

      Here is Dr. Speer's review sheet.

07/08 (Curved) scores for Exam #2 are up on Sakai.
      The average was 75% (after the curve).

      Exam #2 and its answer key can be found here.

07/01 Exam #2 is scheduled for this Thursday (July 4th).

      I have posted a formula sheet here.

      If you are wondering what to expect on the exam, you
      should go here and check out
      Exam #2 from my Spring 2007 and Spring 2008 classes.

      Dr. Speer posted a nice review sheet for exam #2. You
      can find it here.

      You can find a Maple worksheet with plots of direction fields in
      phase planes for two linear systems of DEs here.

      Want some more background in Linear Algebra?
      Dr. Speer posted some helpful Linear Algebra Notes.
      These help fill in some details left out of your textbook.

      In addition, I have taught Math 250 (Intro. to Linear Algebra)
      several times. You might find some of the exam problems from
      that class helpful. The last 2 times I taught Math 250, I
      covered solutions of linear systems of differential equations
      as an application of linear algebra (see Exam #2's).

      You can find these old exams here.
      Exam #1's will have examples of solving linear systems using
      Gaussian Elimination. Exam #2's will have Eigenvector/Eigenvalue
      problems.

06/22 I *finally* posted the answer key for Exam #1.
      You can find it here.

06/19 I reposted grades on Sakai. Hopefully everyone's grades
      are listed now. Sakai tried to delete several students.
      I think everyone is restored at this point.

06/17 I have posted a "Midterm Guess" on Sakai.

      It was computed as follows:
      -------------------------------
      Quiz #1 + Quiz #2  weighted 20%
      Maple 0 + Maple S1 weighted 10%
                 Exam #1 weighted 70%
      -------------------------------

      Of course, I do plan on dropping the lowest quiz, so that
      component is artificially low. Also, Exam #1 is *very*
      heavily weighted (its the only exam I can use for this
      estimate), so if you had a "bad day" your average will
      necessarily look awful.

      Where is Exam #1's answer key? It's coming...soon?

06/15 Exam #1, Maple Lab #0, Maple Lab #S1 grades
      have been posted on Sakai.

06/11 Quiz #2 homework problem answers are posted here.

06/10 Quiz #2 grades are posted on Sakai.

      Formula Sheet for Exam #1

      If you would like an idea about what the exam might be
      like, I have posted an old Math 244 exams (with answer
      keys) here.

      You can find some additional review problems here:
       I) Dr. Speer's review problems for Exam #1 (2006).
      II) Dr. Speer's review problems for Exam #1 (2007).

06/04 For the homework problem involving Euler's method -- Don't try
      to print out all of the intermediate calculations -- There are
      too many!!! To suppress output in Maple use ":" instead of ";".

      For example:

      a := 2; b := 3; a+b;
      would print out...
      a = 2
      b = 3
      5

      on the other hand,
      a := 2; b := 3; a+b:
      would print out...
      a = 2
      b = 3

      (2+3=5 is calculated but not printed out)

06/03 Quiz #2 Homework Problems:
      --------------------------------------------------
      2.3 #23 -- Adapt my Maple example (2.3 #22)
                 and include appropriate graphs.
      8.1 #2 -- You might want to use Maple.
                Definitely don't try to do this by hand!
      --------------------------------------------------

06/02 I *finally* got the quizzes graded and posted the grades
      on Sakai.

05/27 We will have a quiz on Thursday. It will cover Chapter 1
      along with sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.6 (we will cover 2.1
      and 2.6 tomorrow).

      In addition, Maple Lab #0 is due Monday.
      Lab #0 Instructions (.pdf)
      Lab #0 Seed File (.mw)

      Maple Resources:
      --------------------------------------
      Prof. Bumby's Maple for Math 244: instructions (.pdf) and worksheet (.mw)

      General Maple Instructions (.pdf) for Math 251 students.
      Prof. Greenfield's Introduction to Maple
      More general Maple help

05/26 Everything has been posted. Please be aware that we will have
      our first quiz on Thursday and Maple lab #0 is due next Monday.

05/19 Syllabus, schedule, and homework pages will be posted soon.
