Late-time asymptotics of gravitational waves

Abstract: A fundamental problem in the context of Einstein's equations of general relativity is to understand the precise dynamics of gravitational waves emitted in the evolution of small perturbations of black hole spacetime solutions. I will discuss two key aspects of this evolution problem: the existence of late-time polynomial tails and the characterization of resonances. Polynomial tails in the evolution of spacetime perturbations are intimately linked to the nature of singularities in black hole interiors and the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, one of the main outstanding mathematical conjectures in general relativity. Resonances, on the other hand, may be thought of as characteristic oscillations that are intrinsic to the perturbed black hole geometry and they play an important role in experimental gravitational wave observations.
