Abstract: There is a part of human nature that desires to label, box, and group. In mathematics we pursue this urge by way of classification theorems, perhaps most notably in geometry and algebra, with examples such as the classification of finite simple groups or the complete catalogue of wallpaper groups. What is probably less well known is that there are powerful classification schemes for the complex numbers themselves stemming from the field of transcendental number theory. We present some ideas and select results in this direction.
