The Proof is in the Pudding Sauce
Lou Gaudet - Rutgers University
Location: GSL
Date & time: Friday, 20 April 2018 at 1:40PM - 2:40PM
Abstract: In 1896, two mathematicians [1] independently proved the celebrated Prime Number Theorem (PNT), which states that the number of primes at most x is asymptotic to the quantity x/log(x). Just about 120 years later, in 2015, Christopher Schonberger created Hot Ones, an online web series of interviews in which guests must eat exceptionally spicy chicken wings while being interviewed. This Friday, April 20, 2018, I will attempt to marry these two events. Mathematically, I'll be attempting to present a sketch of the proof of the PNT, with some of the details, but more focusing on the intuition and the beautiful ideas and insights behind the constructions. Physically, I'll be attempting to not die from the spice, and to instead suffer with grace and poise. [2]
Additionally, selected members of the audience have volunteered to eat these wings along with me, since, as we all know, misery loves company. If you wish to be such a volunteer [3] then please let me know ASAP. I think there's enough for others, while supplies last! See y'all Friday. Footnotes [1] One was Jacques Salomon Hadamard, and the other was—wait for it—Charles-Jean Étienne Gustave Nicolas Le Vieux, Baron de la Vallée Poussin. It's a good thing they didn't have Net IDs in 1896... I'm looking at you, cjegnlvbvp74. [2] "I postpone death by living, by suffering, by error, by risking, by giving, by losing." — Anai?s Nin [3] Disclaimer: I will not be responsible for any harm/suffering/damages/regret you may incur due to putting spicy things in your mouth. Rutgers will not be responsible, nor the Pizza Seminar. Only you! You gonna do something like this, then you'll accept the dang consequences! Sheesh. |
