Abstract: It is a classical result of Jordan that any finite group acting transitively on a set of size greater than one contains a derangement (i.e. an element with no fixed points). We will discuss variations of this result about counting derangements and applications of these results to various topics in number theory, algebra and arithmetic geometry.
