Singularity-free Big Bang Cosmology

Victoria M. Chayes - Rutgers University

Location:  Hill 502 (statistics conference room)
Date & time: Wednesday, 14 November 2018 at 11:00AM - 12:30PM

Abstract:  "Felix Finster and Christian Hainzl analyzed the behavior of neutrino matter near big bang and big crunch singularities in a closed universe with Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, by coupling Dirac's wave equation with classical gravity. They found that when the cosmological scale function is small, quantum effects lead to oscillations of the energy-momentum tensor that prevent the singularities, and instead "bouncing universe" solutions are possible. We will review the methods used to reach these conclusions, and present the beginning of a work in progress to repeat this analysis for neutrino matter inside a black hole by looking at Dirac's wave equation coupled with the Kantowski–Sachs metric.''
