| Abstract: We all know that math is an amazingly large and varied subject. Even within my chosen field of number theory, I can go to a talk and have no idea what's happening!
(Me sitting in last pizza seminar: "Wait. Did George just index a primitive character with a negative number...?") However, I think that's a big draw for most of us. It's exciting to learn about a problem, and then learn that its solution requires theory which is entirely new to you. In this talk, I will give an example of one of these connections. Ergodic theory is an analysis topic regarding the study of certain measure-preserving transformations. I will describe some results from this field, maybe prove some things, and then show some fun applications of ergodic theory to number theory. And yes, my stupid title is a mashup of "ergodic theory" and "number theory". Sorry. |
