Abstract:  Integro-differential equations have been a very active area of research in recent years. In this talk we will explain what they are and in what sense they are similar to more classical elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The Boltzmann equation is a nonlinear model from statistical mechanics that represents the evolution of particle densities in dilute gases. We will discuss how the techniques learned in the study of general parabolic integro-differential equations are used to obtain regularity estimates for solutions to the Boltzmann equation in the "non-cutoff" case.
