WIP Seminar

A minimizer for a Thomas-Fermi energy functional

 Parker Hund, Rutgers University

Location:  Hill 703
Date & time: Wednesday, 10 April 2019 at 11:00AM - 12:20PM

Abstract: I will prove the existence of a minimizer of an energy functional which is an approximation to a Thomas-Fermi energy functional for a single species of non-relativistic fermions with only Newtonian gravitational interactions. I will also show how minimizers to this functional and similar functionals can be related to the Lane-Emden equation which originated in the study of "gas balls". In this approximate case, the minimizer and corresponding Lane-Emden equation can be solved for in terms of elementary functions.

The WIP Seminars are on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m to 12:20 p.m.
