Abstract: | This talk will be an introduction to Ramsey Theory (going through history and some basic results) and ending with a canonical Ramsey theorem that will hopefully be new even to those already familiar with the area.
So what is Ramsey theory? The motivation behind this area of study is the following question: How large must a structure be before a given property holds? We'll start by discussing Ramsey's original theorem (on colorings of graphs) and some small examples before moving on to the infinite case. Finally we'll prove what's known as a canonical Ramsey theorem which extends our infinite Ramsey theorem to infinitely many colors. |
