Date & time: Wednesday, 17 April 2019 at 3:30PM - 4:30PM
Abstract: Symbolic dynamics is a way to study general dynamical systems, by coding iterates of points with some alphabet. The symmetries of a symbolic dynamical system form a countable group, and can range from being quite complicated to very simple, reflecting the underlying dynamics. I will give an overview of what is known about these groups and highlight numerous open questions in the area.
