Abstract: A basic problem in mechanics is to understand ways that periodic behavior can occur in a physical system. In many cases this corresponds to finding periodic orbits of the Reeb vector field on a contact manifold. We discuss some new results on the existence of such periodic orbits in the three dimensional case. In particular, in the three dimensional case, under some mild assumptions, we can show that there are either two or infinitely many periodic orbits.

This result is joint work with Dan Cristofaro-Gardiner and Dan Pomerleano, based on earlier joint work with Dan C-G and Vinicius Ramos.
