Quantizing General Relativity in the Hamiltonian picture

Maaneli Derakhshani,  Rutgers University

Location:  Hill 423
Date & time: Wednesday, 23 October 2019 at 11:00AM - 12:20PM

Abstract:  I'll describe the standard Hamiltonian (or 3+1) formulation of general relativity theory, along with its Dirac quantization that results in the so-called "Wheeler-DeWitt equation", the central equation of canonical quantum gravity. I'll then discuss some problems with the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, such as the Problem of Time, the Hilbert Space Problem, and the Quantum Measurement Problem. Time permitting, I'll also discuss the "Least Invasive Quantization" of general relativity theory, which also results in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, and the conceptual issues raised by this quantization procedure.
