Location:  Hill 525
Date & time: Friday, 14 February 2020 at 2:00PM - 3:00PM

Speaker: Sam Cogar
Title: An introduction to trace class operators
Abstract: We will begin by introducing the von Neumann-Schatten classes of operators on a Hilbert space. After discussing some general properties, we will focus on trace class operators and present a surprising theorem due to Lidskii. We will conclude with an application of this result to non-selfadjoint operators that appear in scattering theory.

Speaker: Alex Walker
Title: Why study the Riemann Zeta Function?
Abstract: Many results (and conjectures) in modern number theory rely on properties of the Riemann zeta function. In this talk, I'll shed some light on why the zeta function appears in the places it does and how its analytic properties inform the behavior of arithmetic functions.
