Abstract: K_0 (the Grothendieck group) of an exact category has a nice description in terms of generators and relations. Nenashev (after Quillen and Gillet-Grayson) proved that K_1 can also be described in terms of generators and relations, and Grayson extended that argument to all higher K-groups. I will recall this history, sketch Grayson's argument and (ideally) show some advantages of the generators and relations description.
