Black hole entropy and the quantum vacuum

Theodore A. Jacobson - University of Maryland

Location:  Zoom
Date & time: Wednesday, 13 October 2021 at 10:45AM - 11:45AM

50 years ago Bekenstein introduced the strange notion of black hole entropy to save the second law of thermodynamics. At first regarded as folly by the cognoscenti, it has turned out to be the first sure step towards an ultimate melding of gravity and the quantum vacuum that is not yet fully understood. In this talk I'll tell the origins story and follow a few of its developments to the vista from where we stand today.
