Mathematical knots are objects of great interest in low-dimensional topology, the study of which is deeply connected to the study of 3- and 4-manifolds. However, distinguishing two given knots is not always a trivial task - in fact even determining whether a given knot is the unknot can be computationally unfeasible. Enter the world of knot invariants, which provide us with tools for understanding knots. We will discuss two polynomial knot invariants in depth, and then consider their categorifications.
