DESCRIPTION:<p>This is an NSF-funded conference on the notion of mathematical explanati
 on. The conference will be held on May 22-23 2023 at the Rutgers University
  Inn and is aimed at bringing together academics who study the notion of ma
 thematical explanation from philosophical and from educational/psychologica
 l perspectives. The idea is to bring together philosophers of mathematics, 
 epistemologists, psychologists, and mathematics educators, to discuss how d
 evelopments in their own fields could meaningfully contribute to the work o
 n mathematical explanation where their fields intersect. In particular, we 
 want to explore the ways in which mathematical explanation engenders unders
 tanding, by focusing on the relationship between different types of philoso
 phical accounts of mathematical explanation, educational approaches to the 
 characterization of effective explanations in the mathematics classroom, an
 d work at the intersection of these two perspectives.</p><p>This is a free
