Homomorphisms to 3-manifold groups

 I will describe some joint work with Michael Hull and Hao Liang on the structure of the set of homomorphisms from an arbitrary finitely generated group to the collection of all fundamental groups of compact 3-manifolds, answering questions of Agol-Liu and Reid-Wang-Zhou.  The techniques come from geometric group theory, particularly various kinds of limiting R-trees.
