We will introduce the historical background of Poincaré´s conjecture before turning to Thurston´s geometrization conjecture, taking particular care to focus on understanding what the conjecture says, the definitions involved, and special cases and examples. Along the way, we will mention some other important concepts in low-dimensional topology as appropriate, for example the Gromov norm and the Mostow rigidity theorem.
