I will define the mapping class group for surfaces. I will talk about an important element in the mapping class group called Dehn twists and see how the structure of the mapping class group relates to Dehn twists. Then I will talk about the relationship of mapping class groups with the fundamental group. If I have time, I will talk about the Nielsen-Thurston classification and how it relates to geometrization of 3-manifolds.
