Title: Applying cognitive science principles for effective math teaching
Abstract: Principles from cognitive science can help us understand how students learn and retain information, which, in turn, can inform our teaching.
This is often referred to as the “science of learning” and has been studied by cognitive scientists for many years. Although I have been teaching post-secondary math for over twenty years, I wasn’t aware of some of this research for most of my career. I became fascinated with cognitive science, and what it implies about learning math, several years ago and I have since had the opportunity to speak with and learn from several experts in the area. I will discuss some principles of cognitive science that are particularly relevant to teaching math and how these can be applied in post-secondary teaching.
