Weights are important objects in modular representation theory of finite groups and encode fundamental information. More generally, the notion of a relative weight, introduced by Robinson, can be used to state important conjectures in the field. In this talk, I will recall the definition of a relative weight and introduce some of the problems related to these objects. I will then focus on the specific case of a finite reductive group and show how these problems can be studied by using information coming from relative Weyl groups. In order to achieve this task, I will first introduce and describe some of the fundamental objects and results underlying Deligne-Lusztig theory.
